JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College volleyball team earned a three-set win at Saint Peter's, snapping a six-match losing skid while earning its first victory in its opponent's building this afternoon. The Gaels earned a 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 victory.
The first set was the closest of the three with 12 tie scores and four lead changes. Trailing 22-21, Iona scored the final four points to close out the set 25-22.
Iona took the lead for good early in the second set when junior OH
Madisyn Spence's service ace that made the score 12-11 and erased a three-point deficit, the squad's largest of the match. The point came in the middle of an 8-1 rally by the Gaels. Saint Peter's would get to within one point at 16-15 but the Maroon & Gold held off the hosts 25-21.
The Gaels led wire-to-wire in third set opening the frame with an 11-3 advantage. The Peacocks got to within four points at 16-12 before Iona finished the match with nine of the final 14 points to take the match.
Junior OH
Alicja Pawelec had a match-high 19 kills. She hit .432 with three errors in 37 attempts. She missed a double-double by just one dig. Sophomore OH
Taylor Cembalisty pasted nine kills and five digs while Spence had eight kills, seven digs and three aces.
Freshman setter
Natalie Ziskin recorded ad double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs. Senior libero
Theresa Harvey posted 18 digs in the win.
Saint Peter's Lauren Behrens posted 11 kills, Jenny Pliska had 24 digs and Kristina Baehr 28 assists for the home team.
The Gaels complete a seven-game road trip with two contests this week, at Marist on Wednesday (Oct. 24) and at Fairfield on Saturday (Oct. 27).
