PROVIDENCE, RI - The Iona College men's water polo team erased a four goal deficit in the fourth quarter and surged to a 12-10 overtime victory over Fordham in the fifth place game at the 2012 CWPA Northern Division Championship.
The two teams were even at two after the first quarter, before Fordham took control with a three-goal second quarter to lead 5-2 at the half.
The Rams added to their lead in the third quarter, taking a 7-2 lead. A late plenty goal by the Gaels trimmed the deficit to four, 7-3, entering the fourth quarter.
After exchanging goals to make it 8-4, Iona scored four times over the final 5:16 of the game, forcing overtime on a goal with 15 seconds remaining.
In overtime, each team scored in the opening minute, but two goals by the Gaels would help Iona take an 11-9 lead after the first three-minute session.
In the second session of overtime, Fordham pulled within one at 11-10, before an Iona goal with 19 seconds left sealed the victory for Iona who picked up a win at Northerns for the 15th consecutive season.
Sophomore Jake Lloyd led the Gaels with four goals in the win while classmate Ian Thompson had three tallies. Junior Sean Davis scored twice while sophomore James Ramaley, senior Kevin Caulfield and junior Matthew Stelnicki had the other Iona goals. Junior Stefen Hill made six saves in net.
