NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team split a pair of CWPA North contests Saturday at the Hynes Athletic Center. In day's the opener, the Gaels came out on the short end of a 14-11 decision to No. 13 Brown. In the finale, the Maroon & Gold topped Connecticut College 14-9.
In the opener, the Bears and Gaels played close throughout the first 16 minutes, with the teams tied at one after the first quarter and six after at half. Brown was able to push ahead with a five goal third quarter, while the Gaels were only able to find the net twice in the stanza. Iona matched Brown with three goals in the fourth, but were unable to make up the margin.
Against Connecticut College, the Gaels opened the game with a three goal lead of 5-2 after the first quarter. After scoring twice in the second quarter, and holding on to a 7-5 lead at half, Iona scored five goals in the third, opening up a five goal lead. The Camels held the Gaels to just two goals in the fourth, but Iona was able to hang on for its second conference win of the season.
Stelnicki led the Gaels with four goals. Senior
Connor Bracken and Lloyd each picked up three tallies while Elmore had two goals. Stiles had one goal and one assist in the contest with Ramaley putting in a goal of his own. Hill recorded 15 saves for Iona in the win.
Iona next heads to the west coast for seven games in five days, beginning with a matchup at Cal Baptist on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
