Box Score LEWISTON, NY - The Iona College volleyball team forged a split of its Western New York trip with a three set sweep at Niagara this afternoon. Five different Gaels recorded eight or more kills in the 25-20, 25-12, 25-19 match win.
Iona's 57 combined kills were the second most in a three-set match in school history, one shy of the record 58 set vs. Marist on Oct. 15, 2005 at the Hynes Center. The Gaels also hit .444 as a team, the third highest single-match average.
Sophomore MH McKenzie Humann had a breakout effort in the win. She had 14 kills on 20 attempts with just one error for a .650 hitting percentage. It was the second highest single-match attack percentage with 20 or more swings in school history. Gael alum Colleen Genett hit .667 (15-1-21) vs. Loyola Maryland on Nov. 5, 2010. Humann also added Iona's lone block of the match.
Senior OH Alicja Pawelec extended her double-digit kill streak to five matches with 12 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Junior RS Taylor Cembalisty had her second-straight double-double and third of the year with 11 kills and 10 digs while hitting .368. Junior OH Catrina Warren was one dig shy of a sixth straight match with a double-double, recording 10 kills and nine digs. Rookie Karly White was 8-for-10 on attack attempts, an .800 hitting percentage.
The catalyst for the offense, sophomore setter Natalie Ziskin, posted 50 assists and six digs. The 50 assists were one shy of a three-set school record. She was the second performer in school history to record 50 assists in three sets following Alyssa Morales' 51 on Oct. 28, 2007 vs. Marist. Senior libero Madisyn Spence added nine assists in the win.
The Gaels are back in action next Saturday at first-place Manhattan in an important early season matchup between the two teams.
