WSD Cruises By Manhattan In MAAC Opener

RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona College women's swimming and diving team opened up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition Saturday afternoon against Manhattan at Riverdale Country Day School.  The Gaels won all but one event, and cruised to a 173-89 win.

The 200 medley relay team of senior Maria Skeivys, senior Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff, freshman Kathryn Nevin and sophomore Melissa Dorsch started the day with a victory in the event, touching first with a time of 1:52.35. The relay of sopomore Leigh Musselman, senior Sophia Hyokyvaara, sophomore Daniela Beasley and freshman Maria Lopez took third with a time of 1:58.07.

Senior Brigitte Doughty took first in the next event, the 1000 free, with a time of 11:08.16.

Sophomore Mary Ellen Mangione took first in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.72. Freshman Natalie Bowman was right behind in second with a time of 2:02.24.

Skeivys took first in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.47. Lopez finished third in the event with a time of 1:04.58.

Dodenhoff picked up the win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.88. Hyokyvaara was second with a time of 1:11.48.

The Gaels continued to dominate, as Beasley took first in the next event, the 200 fly, with a time of 2:18.41. Doughty was left than a second behind with a time of 2:18.69 to take the runner-up slot.

Bowman was first in the 50 free with a time of 25.61. Dorsch was third with a time of 25.90.

Manhattan picked up its first victory of the event in the 100 free. Dorsch took second in the race with a time of 56.41. Dodenhoff was third, touching the wall in 57.08.

Skievys got the Gaels back on track with a first place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:14.79. Bowman was second with a time of 2:16.30.

Hyokyaara was first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:33.27. Nevin was right behind in second with a time of 2:37.52.

Mangione took first in the 500 free with a time of 5:32.75.

Doughty picked up a victory in the 100 fly, touching with a time of 1:03.11. Lopez was second in the event with a time of 1:04.16.

Mangione took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.15. Beasley finished third in the event with a time of 2:26.97.

The relay of Nevin, Bowman, Dorsch and Dodenhoff took first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:41.82. The quartet of Doughty, Skeivys, Lopez and Mangione finished second with a time of 1:44.43.

Iona is back in action Wednesday, when it hosts Seton Hall at the Hynes Center Pool.
