PRINCETON, NJ - Determined to avenge last Saturday's loss to Navy at Annapolis, the Iona College men's water polo team instead suffered its fourth straight loss with a 14-6 defeat to the Midshipmen in the first of five matches at the three-day 2013 Princeton Invite at Princeton University. Navy defeated the Gaels 16-9 last Saturday at the 2013 Navy Open.
Junior Jake Lloyd led Iona with three goals. Junior Kyle Elmore scored two goals, and junior Ian Thompson added one. Senior goalie Stefen Hill recorded 11 saves.
Iona struck first with 17 seconds gone as Thompson scored, but Navy tied the game, then took the lead on two straight scores. Lloyd's first goal tied the game at two with 3:20 left in the first quarter, but Navy answered with three straight goals for a 5-2 edge going into the second.
Forty-four seconds into the second quarter, Lloyd trimmed Navy's lead to 5-3. But the Midshipmen scored twice until Elmore answered with 4:11 left to the half. Navy scored again for an 8-4 lead at intermission.
In the third period both teams netted two goals with Lloyd and Elmore scoring again. Navy led 10-6 at the quarter's end, then scored four unanswered goals in the fourth period for the win.
On Saturday, the Gaels face Johns Hopkins at 10:30 am and George Washington at 8:30 pm. Iona dropped a close 12-11 season-opening match to Hopkins last Saturday at Annapolis.
