Box Score UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - The Iona College volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign with a three set loss to William & Mary in the first match of the 2014 Penn State Classic at Rec Hall. The Gaels fell to the Tribe 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16.
"The outcome was disappointing," said fourth-year head coach Jon Killingbeck. "We played well in stretches but just were not consistent enough throughout the match."
William & Mary scored the first eight points of the first set and led by as many as 14 points after taking a 22-8 lead late in the set. The Gaels rallied for six of the last nine points but fell 25-14.
With the score tied at 3-3, a 10-3 run by the Tribe set the tone in the middle set. Iona closed within two points at 22-20 following an 8-2 run of its own but surrendered the final three points in the 25-20 defeat.
The third set wad all but decided with a 7-0 run by William & Mary following a 4-4 tie.
Senior OH Catrina Warren led the Gaels with nine kills and 12 digs. She added two aces for a team-best 11 points. Senior RS Taylor Cembalisty had eight kills and 14 digs along with an eight for 10 points in the match. In the middle, senior Shannon Ward and sophomore Karly White combined for 10 kills and three blocks. Junior setter Natalie Ziskin had 20 assists and six digs while senior libero Katie Marabella posted nine digs in the loss.
The Gaels complete action at the Penn State Classic when they take on the host Nittany Lions, the No. 1 team in the nation at 10:00 am. The Maroon & Gold also takes on the Big 12's TCU at 4:00 pm.
