Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team earned a four set win over Bryant in its 2014 home opener in the second game of the Gaels four-team round robin tournament Friday night at the Hynes Center. The Gaels took the first set 25-16, dropped the second 25-18 and won the third and fourth 25-19 and 25-16.
Senior OH Catrina Warren posted her fourth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs. She added four block and two aces for a team-high point total of 18 points. Senior RS Taylor Cembalisty missed a double-double by one kill with her nine-block, 16-dig effort. Sophomore MB Karly White hit a team-best .421 with 10 kills to go along with three blocks. Her partner up the middle, senior Shannon Ward had seven kills and four blocks. Rookie OH Kassandra Darnaby posted seven kills and nine digs in the win.
Junior setter Natalie Ziskin posted 39 assists and seven digs. Senior libero Katie Marabella had a season-high 27 digs to anchor the back line for the Maroon & Gold.
Iona never trailed in the first set and pulled away with four straight points after the score was tied at 1-1. Bryant pulled within four at 9-5 but that was as close as it would get in the 25-16 opening frame defeat.
The Gaels used an 8-4 run midway through the second set to get within one point of the Bulldogs but four straight points by the visiting team built an insurmountable margin late in the frame.
Down 4-1 in the third, Iona scored six straight points and took the lead for good. The six-point advantage at the end of the set matched the largest lead of the frame for the Maroon & Gold.
A decisive 5-0 for the Gaels early in the final frame set the tone. Iona ran out to a 19-10 advantage before the nine-point set win.
Three Bryant performers had 10 or more kills led by a 11 point, 12 dig double-double by Elana Lohr. Libero Debora Magalhaes had 21 digs and setter Vika Nesterov had seven kills, 34 assists and 19 digs in the loss.
Iona is back in action tomorrow at the Hynes Center with two contests at 1:00 pm vs. Hartford and 7:00 pm vs. La Salle. The day begins with La Salle and Bryant at 10:00 am.
