WEST HARTFORD, CT - Four second half goals by the opposition proved to be the difference as the Iona College women's soccer team fell to Hartford 5-1 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Stadium.
The Gaels got out in front early, taking a lead in the fourth minute. Off a pass from sophomore Erika Flowers, freshman Marisa Bentley scored his first collegiate goal from the left side of the box to give Iona a 1-0 lead.
From there, the Hawks scored five unanswered tallies. Hartford evened the game in the 36th minute when Elise Galipo scored off the deflection of a corner kick.
With the score knotted at one at the half, the Hawks scored their final four goals in the second. In the 54th minute, Hartford recoreded the game-winner when Chanel Johnson scored her fourth goal of the season. Sidney Spremullo put the Hawks ahead 3-1 in the 67th minute, before Johnson scored her second of the day in the 71st and Galipo her second in the 74th.
Overall, Hartford held a 22-8 advantage in shots, and a 6-3 cushion in corner kicks. Iona goalkeeper Lauren Ferris made four saves in 83-plus minutes, while freshman Morgan McBrier did not face a shot in the final 6:56 of the game. Hartford starter Jessica Jurg made five saves for the Hawks.
The Gaels, 3-5-0 on the year, resume non-conference action Friday when they host NJIT at 4:00 pm.
