PROVIDENCE, RI/NEW LONDON, CT - The Iona College men's water polo team began CWPA North league action Saturday. The Gaels played two contests on the road, beginning with a 16-11 loss at Brown. In the second game of the day, the Maroon & Gold defeated Connecticut College 15-7.
In the opener, the Gaels and Bears traded goals in the first two periods, as the teams headed into halftime knotted at seven. Brown outscored the Maroon & Gold in the third quarter 5-1 to take a four goal lead before adding four more in the fourth to take the five-goal margin of victory.
Senior Jake Lloyd led the way with five goals and an assist in the contest, while classmate James Ramaley had five assists. Senior Ian Thompson registered three goals for Iona, while senior Rafael Romero, junior Zach Presto and sophomore Chris Ellis had one tally each. Matt McCrudden made 11 saves for Iona.
Iona opened its contest against Connecticut College with four goals, before extending its lead to six, 9-3, at half. The Gaels took a 12-6 lead into the final quarter before scoring three more times in the fourth.
Against the Camels, Presto led the Gaels with five points on three goals and two assists. Lloyd registered three goals, while Thompson, Ramaley and freshman Zach Roper each scored twice. Ellis and sophomore Elerick Curet recorded one goal apiece in the win. McCrudden made nine saves for Iona.
The Gaels are back in action Thursday, when they welcome Fordham to the Hynes Center for a 7:30 pm start.
