PRINCETON, NJ - The Iona College men's water polo team began its 2014 campaign with a 20-11 loss to Johns Hopkins Saturday morning at the Princeton Invite.
"We got off to a good start in the first half, but our poor transition defense cost us in the second half," said head coach Brian Kelly. "We also left a lot of scoring chances in the pool, which kept us from getting back into the game."
Senior Jake Lloyd totalled a game-high eight goals in the contest, while seniors Nicholas Joslyn and Ian Thompson and junior Zach Presto had one goal each. Johnny Beal, Conor Hehir and Langdon Froomer each scored a team-high three goals for Johns Hopkins.
The Gaels grabbed a 4-2 lead after the first, with Lloyd scoring three goals. The Blue Jays responded by outscoring the Maroon & Gold 13-3 over the second and third quarters, taking a 15-7 into the final quarter. Johns Hopkins tallied five scores in the fourth, while Iona scored four times.
The Maroon & Gold is back in action Sunday, with game times to be announced following a weather cancellation of a portion of Saturday's games.
