NEW LONDON, CT – The Iona College men's water polo game split two CWPA Northern Division matches on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Gaels started the day defeating Connecticut College, then fell to #12 Brown in the conclusion of the doubleheader.
IONA 21, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 11
The Gaels turned up the offense motor against the Camels, capitalizing on a fantastic effort by sophomore Zach Roper. The Orland Park, IL native scored five goals on six shots, in addition to creating two steals and a couple kick outs drawn.
Senior Rafael Romero and junior Hudson Grieve scored three goals each, with junior Chris Ellis, and sophomore Marc Stauble notching two goals apiece as well. The 21 goals scored by Iona is the highest total of the season thus far.
Junior Anthony Zdanavicius made ten saves in goal and added in four assists.
Overall, the Gaels drew 14 Connecticut College kick outs and manifested six steals.
With the win, Iona swept the season series against the Camels, outscoring the conference rival 40-16 over the two matchups this season.
#12 BROWN 19, IONA 9
Looking for the major upset, Iona came out strong against #12 Brown and held a 2-1 lead. However, strong middle quarters play from the Bears propelled them to an eventual 19-9 win of the Gaels.
The Maroon & Gold's upset bid was squelched when they were outscored by Brown 13-5 in the second and third quarters. Zdanavicius made eight saves in goal to try and keep the Gaels in the contest.
Sophomores Patrick Judge and Randy Weiskittel, along with Grieve led the Iona attack, each scoring two goals. Grieve and Ellis drew two kick outs against the Bears.
Iona will take to the pool tomorrow for two more CWPA matchups against #12 Harvard, and MIT.
