Softball Splits Final Doubleheader Of CSUN Tournament

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The Iona Gaels softball team earned a split in their double header finale at the CSUN Tournament by defeating Buffalo 6-4, and then falling to Colorado State 10-2. With the split, the Gaels move their record to 2-9 on the young season.

In the opener, senior Brianna Schauer collected two hits and drove in four with a first inning grand slam, that pushed Iona ahead after Buffalo scored twice in the top of the frame. Senior Allison Hand delivered a 3-4 effort, including a solo home run to left field in a two run second inning for the Maroon & Gold.

Sophomore Ashlyn Morris, sophomore Kristen Turner and junior Sarah Schutz also recorded multi-hit games in the win.

In the circle, junior Jordan Courage lead the way for the Gaels, going 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs (three earned) and walked three batters. she picked up her first win of the year, moving her record to 1-3 on the season.

In the nightcap, Schultz lead they way at the plate with a 3-4 afternoon. Turner turned in her second multi- hit game of the day, going 2-4 with a double, a run batted in, and a run scored. Morris. Redshirt sophomore Christene Costello, and sophomore Katie Newton collected the rest of the eight hits in the game for the Gaels.

Sophomore Sarah McMahon struggled to find her command in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned) and walking two batters. The loss drops her record to 0-4 on the young season.

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 17 when Iona takes on Fairleigh Dickinson and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, CA. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
