WSOC Comes Up Just Short Vs. Columbia, 1-0

NEW YORK, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team fell for the fourth consecutive time Sunday afternoon, suffering a close 1-0 road loss to the Columbia Lions.

The Lions struck early, in the second minute, for the eventual game-winning goal. Rachel Alexander scored unassisted, and from that moment, the game remained in the hands of Columbia.

The Gaels defense faced 16 shots, with freshman goalkeeper Abigail Roper making five saves. Graduate Lauren Ferris started the game in goal, but was replaced in the second half by Roper. Ferris made one save herself in the opening 45 minutes.

Emma Anderson fired five shots for Columbia, with Alexander booting three in the direction of the goal herself.

For Iona, the offense came from Christine Rebus, who took two shots. Sophomore Charlotte Stuart and freshman Mariana Jaramillo each had a shot as well.

Iona did not have a corner attempt opportunity in the game, and had to defend against eight Lion chances.

The Gaels will look to end their scoreless drought and get back on the winning track Friday, Sat. 18, on the road against Sacred Heart.
