PRINCETON, NJ - The Iona men's water polo team (5-6) fell to #14 Princeton 12-7 Friday night. Jay Pagano and Quinn Lloyd led the Gaels with two goals each.
The Skinny:
- Princeton opened the scoring 36 seconds into the match to take the early lead. The Gaels tied it up on a strike by senior Hudson Grieve with 6:49 remaning in the quarter.
- After trading goals, the Tigers scored three unanswered to lead 5-2 at the end of the opening period.
- The Tigers notched the first goal of the second quarter, followed by a goal by freshman Quinn Lloyd. Princeton finished the half scoring the next three, leading to a 9-3 deficit at halftime.
- After an opening goal in the third quarter by Princeton, junior Marc Stauble scored to trim the Princeton lead to 10-4. The Tigers added two more before junior Andrew Judge tallied his first goal of the year, as the Gaels entered the fourth quarter trailing 12-5.
- The Gaels' defense held Princeton scoreless in the final frame. Goals by junior Zach Roper and Pagano put the final score at 12-7.
- Lloyd tallied two goals and was credited with one kickout drawn. Junior Jay Pagano tallied his first two goals of the season.
- Stauble, Grieve, and Roper each netted one goal.
- Freshman Jorge Andres Torres played the entirety of the game, stopping nine shots.
- On the defensive end, Patrick Judge collected three steals. Matthew Rothman, Andres Guerra, and Stauble added two each.
Next Contest:
The Maroon and Gold will return to the Hynes Center this weekend for their first home contests of the season beginning on Saturday. The Gaels will host No. 8 Harvard at 10:00 AM, and MIT at 5:00 PM. Sunday will see the Gaels compete against No. 15 Brown University.
