PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND - The Iona College men's water polo team returned to the road, falling to No. 12 Brown University in a Northeast Water Polo Conference contest Saturday night.
Junior Marc Stauble led the Gaels (9-18, 1-7 NEWPC) with two goals. Senior Hudson Grieve, junior Zach Roper and sophomore Philip Wachowski tallied the other three Iona goals.
Freshman Jorge Andres Torres started in net, playing three quarters and stopping 12 Bears (19-7, 6-2 NEWPC) shots. Freshman Michael Banks came in relief in the fourth quarter, allowing three goals and making two steals On defense, Iona made eleven steals and blocked one shot. The Gaels drew ten Brown kickouts, while being ejected six times.
The Maroon and Gold struggled during the first half of the game, conceding nine goals in the first 15:42 of play before Stauble put the Gaels on the board. The Gaels went into the second half trailing 9-1.
Brown opened up the third quarter with a goal 24 ticks in before Stauble scored his second of the game to cut the lead back to nine. Roper followed with his lone goal of the contest 39 seconds later. After the Bears found the back of the net with 4:44 remaining in the quarter, Wachowski scored his fifth of the season to trim the deficit to seven, 11-4. Grieve's tally cut the Brown lead to six with 1:49 remaining before the Bears struck again to take a 12-5 lead into the fourth quarter The Gaels conceded three goals in the final frame and were held of the scoresheet.
The Maroon and Gold will conclude their 2016 campaign tomorrow with a double header against MIT (10:00 AM) and No. 12 Harvard (2:00 PM) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
