Iona Holds On For Win Vs. Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Iona College softball program took to the road Wednesday afternoon and came away with an excellently played 3-2 victory over Seton Hall.  The win snaps the Gaels' eight game losing streak.

Senior Christine Costello pitched a gem of a contest, going seven strong innings to carry the Maroon & Gold to their sixth win of the season.

Junior left fielder Ashlynn Morris had two hits in the leadoff spot for Iona, driving in one of the three runs.  Freshman right fielder Marisa Gergel had one hits along with junior first basemen Kristen Turner, and junior centerfielder Kelsey Long.

Senior catcher Brianna King and freshman second basemen, and birthday girl, Hailey Thompson had the other RBI.

The lone three runs in the game all came across in the second inning; King reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Turner.  Thompson came up next and brought Long across the plate with another FC.  Morris capped on the rally by singling the pitcher, allowing senior third basemen Sarah Schutz to score the Gaels' third run of the day.

Seton Hall threatened in the final inning following a singled by sophomore Alexis Walkden.  Following a swipe of second base, senior Alex Rabbetts doubled to drive in the Pirates first run of the game.  Sophomore utility plater Alyssa Prukop made it a one-run game on a single in the following at bat.

Costello was able to sophomore pinch hitter Alannah Basile to ground out to end the game and seal the Iona W.

Iona will take the diamond at home in New Rochelle, NY tomorrow afternoon against rival Fordham.
