STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Gaels fell in both contests of Wednesday's nonconference matchup against Wagner. The Seahawks took game one in walk off fashion, 4-3, and followed it up in game two by shutting out the Maroon & Gold in route to a 7-0 decisive victory.
GAME 1: Wagner 4, Iona 3
Wagner started the scoring in the bottom of the first when sophomore Maddie Marable crossed the place on a two-out RBI single by freshman Karen Prihoda.
Iona answered the call by scoring one run in the second, third and fourth inning. Sophomore Tori Danner continued her hot inning with her second homerun of the season to give the Gaels the first run of the game. Junior Kristen Turner delivered a run in the third, and Danner drove in her second of the game to cap off the scoring in the fourth.
Iona led 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning with freshman Alana Evans in the circle. The rookie had come to replace starter, senior Carly Argyle in the fifth, and had allowed no runs entering the final frame.
Freshman Erica Krumbine led off the seventh with a walk, and junior Brianna Tredway followed it up with a double. Freshman Lauren Serrato singled to left, and left fielder Ashlyn Morris committed a scoring error that allowed the game to become knotted at three apiece. Marable sacrificed Serrato over, and freshman Jessica Carlucci wrapped up the comeback with a single to make the final 4-3.
Senior Jordan Courage had two hits and one run scored for Iona. Danner went 2/3 from the plate, driving in two runs. Seniors Sarah Schutz and Brianna King had one hit each, and freshman Alana Evans along with junior Katie Newton each chipped in one base-knock.
Argyle went the first four inning, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks. Evans ended the game going 2.1 innings, taking the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in the final at-bat of the Seahawks.
GAME 2: Wagner 7, Iona 0
The Iona bats were silenced in game two by junior McKaleigh Goodale, who is credited with both wins in the doubleheader. Starting the backend, she went seven innings, allowing zero runs on six hits and striking out three.
Each of the Iona hits came from different batters, with freshman Marisa Gergel, senior Christine Costello and junior Kelsey Long going the hit parade from the participants of game one.
Harkness went four innings in the game two start, allowing just one earned run on one hit. Senior Jordan Courage went the final two innings, seeing four runs cross the plate, only two earned. The Maroon & Gold were not up to their defensive par, committing four errors in the shutout loss.
Iona returns to action on Sunday, April 24 in Hamden, CT when they take on Quinnipiac in a MAAC doubleheader.
