NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona Water Polo team dropped to 0-5 in NEWPC play, falling 12-6 to the Princeton Tigers at the Hynes Center Wednesday afternoon.
Zach Roper netted a pair of goals, with
Quinn Lloyd,
Patrick Judge,
Dalton Hansten and
Jonathan Hulbert each tallying one goal each.
Jorge Andres Torres played sixteen minutes, making four saves and allowing nine goals.
Sebastian Van Reeken stopped 11 shots.
The Gaels were kicked out nine times compared to four by the Tigers, and collected seven steals.
Hulbert opened up the scoring 1:23 into the game, but was answered 29 seconds later by the opposition. The Tigers took the lead with 2:49 left in the quarter, but Roper found the back of the net with 1:31 to go. The teams remained scoreless as the scoreboard read 2-2 after eight minutes of play.
Iona was outscored 4-1 in the second quarter, with the lone Iona tally coming from the arm of Lloyd with 30 ticks left. Iona went into the break down 6-3.
In the third quarter, Princeton took a four goal lead and held the Gaels off the score sheet until 49 seconds remaining when Roper netted his final tally of the game.
Princeton took the reigns in the fourth quarter, outscoring Iona 5-2. Hansten scored with 4:31 left in regulation , but the Tigers netted the next two within a minute's time.
Patrick Judge answered with 3:32 left, to pull the Gaels back within three. Iona could not bury a tally in the final three minutes, and conceded three goals.
The Gaels (4-14, 0-5 NEWPC) have a week off before travling to Brooklyn to take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday Oct. 18.
