Iona Women's Soccer Season Comes To Close In MAAC Quarterfinals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – The tenth-seeded Iona College women's soccer team closed its 2017 season with a MAAC Championship quarterfinals loss to the second-seeded Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday morning, 6-0.

Manhattan applied offensive pressure from the opening kickoff.  After having two corner kick chances in the opening four minutes, senior Erica Modena gave the Jaspers the lead with a header assisted by junior Emma Saul.  Just 65 seconds later, Saul assisted on Manhattan's second score off a corner, finding senior Nicole Aylmer alone in the box.

Iona mustered its offensive presence in the closing minutes of the first half.  Graduate Jacque Rice had two shots, one blocked and one go wide, in the 42nd minute.  Freshman Julia Caracappa and junior Mariana Jaramillo also had scoring chances in the final five minutes of the frame.  Jaramillo had the Gaels' only shot on goal in the first half in the 26th minute.

The Jaspers had eight first half shots and five corner kick opportunities.  Modena nearly had her second goal of the game in the 28th minute when an eight-yarded strike hit the post and deflected out of bounds.

Manhattan scored its third goal on the 54th minute with the connection of Saul and Modena once again.  Saul scored the goal with a shot into the right corner off a short cross from her teammate.  The Jaspers continued to apply pressure with three dangerous chances in the 59th minute; Martinez was forced to make one save amongst three shots against sophomore Arianna Montefusco.

Modena scored her second goal of the game in the 61st minute to give the Jaspers a four goal lead.

The Gaels looked to immediately respond with co-captains Marissa Dundas and Julia Campagna attempting shots on goal from distance in the 64th and 65th minute respectively.

Manhattan's fifth goal was scored by freshman Lindsay Healy in the 81st minute.  Its final tally came in the 87' with junior Annie Doerr taking a set piece pass from freshman Maddie Barrow.

The Maroon & Gold were outshot on the game 18-14.  Senior Tiffany Martinez made four saves in net for the Gaels.

Iona finishes the season with a 3-14-3 overall record.  Saturday's win against seventh-seeded Fairfield was the first postseason victory for the Maroon & Gold since the program won the MAAC Championship back in 1992.
