Cambridge, MA – A strong third quarter by the Engineers was too much for the Gaels (7-17, 1-7) to overcome, falling to MIT 8-5 Saturday night.
Senior
Marc Stauble led Iona in goals with two.
Matthew Rothman,
Patrick Hudak, and
Quinn Lloyd each tallied one goal apiece. Lloyd added a team-high five steals in the contest.
Sebastian Van Reeken played the entirety of the game, stopping seven shots and collecting four steals.
As a team, the Gaels nabbed 22 steals, committed 17 turnovers, drew six kickouts and were excluded nine times.
Iona, fresh off it's dramatic win at the Hynes Center Thursday night, kept the momentum rolling scoring the first two of the game. Rothman connected with a goal two minutes in, and Stauble doubled the lead 2:10 later. With 1:11 remaining, the Engineers took advantage of a
Jonathan Hulbert kickout to cut the Iona lead to one, 2-1.
The second quarter saw the Gaels held off the scoresheet, while conceding two goals. The Maroon & Gold went into the half down 3-2.
The Gaels struggled in the third quarter, letting in three Engineers' goals while only finding the back of the net once. MIT scored 1:12 into the third frame and cashed in on a five-meter penalty drawn by
Zach Roper to widen the gap to three, 5-2. Lloyd stopped the run 23 seconds later, but the opposition netted a pair in the final 1:40 to bring the score to 7-3 in favor of MIT.
MIT padded onto the lead on a powerplay goal with 5:47 remaining in regulation, but was answered with Stauble's first tally of the contest 39 ticks later. Stauble added his final score with 3:04 remaining.
The Gaels hit the road tomorrow for a double-header at Harvard at 9:00 AM and at Brown University at 2:30 PM.
