PRINCETON, NJ – The 2017 men's water polo regular season concluded Wednesday night, with Iona falling to No. 14 Princeton 17-9.
Zach Roper and
Marc Stauble each notched a pair of goals.
Patrick Hudak,
Patrick Judge,
Spencer Anthony,
Dalton Hansten and
Jonathan Hulbert all found the back of the net. In goal
Jorge Andres Torres stopped 14 Tigers' shots and collected three steals.
As a team, the Gaels corralled nine steals and drew five Tigers kickouts.
Iona found themselves in a hole right out of the gate, conceding the first goal 24 seconds in. After Roper tied the score, the opposition answered back 12 seconds later. Over the next three minutes, Princeton scored two additional goals before Hulbert answered back to bring Iona back within a pair, 4-2.
An offensive surge led to Princeton outscoring the Gaels 6-2 in the second frame. The host team scored the first two goals of the quarter before coach
Brian Kelly called timeout. Stauble responded on the following possession to bring Iona back within three. Princeton score four goals over a 2:32 span to pull away. Stauble's tally with 2:14 remaining in the half brought Iona back to within seven, 10-3.
The Gaels could not find an offensive groove in the third quarter, getting outscored 5-1. The Tigers scored the frame's first three goals before
Patrick Judge cut the deficit to nine. Princeton scored the final two goals of the quarter to take a 15-5 lead.
Hudak scored the first goal of the third quarter, followed by Anthony. After Princeton scored the next two, Hansten and Roper tallied the final scores of the contest.
Iona concludes the regular season finishing 7-20 and 1-10 in NEWPC play. The team will travel to Cambridge, MA to take on either Harvard or Princeton in the opening round of the NEWPC Championships on Friday, November 17 at 6:00 PM.
