WORCESTER, MA - The Iona College men's basketball team used 20 made 3-pointers, second most in program history, to secure a 82-68 road victory at Holy Cross this evening in non-conference action. The 3-point makes also set a new Hart Center record, with the previous being 15 made.
The Maroon & Gold shot 20-for-37 (54.1 percent) from behind the arc to be a part of the team's 27-for-52 (51.9 percent) shooting from the field. The 20 made 3-pointers sits second on the all-time single-game list in Iona program history, with the record sitting at 24 makes. The mark came on November 26, 2014 in a 126-76 victory against Delaware State at the Hynes Center.
Schadrac Casimir led the team that evening with eight made 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 40 points.
Casimir led the Gaels once again this time around with 22 points, a season-high, off the bench behind 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with five assists and two steals.
Jan Svandrlik joined Casimir as part of the reserve group with 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc for all 12 of his points in addition to four rebounds.
Deyshonee Much posted 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals while
Rickey McGill added 11 points and five assists.The Maroon & Gold accumulated 20 assists on the 27 made field goals.Â
Iona shot 12-of-20 from 3-point range in the opening half towards a 15-point halftime lead of 38-23. The first 10 made field goals of the game for the Gaels came from distance before
Roland Griffin connected on the first made two-point field goal with 3:51 remaining in the half. The shooting helped turn a tie game of 12-12 into a 32-20 advantage for Iona in less than seven minutes.
Casimir, Svandrlik and McGill all connected on three 3-pointers each in the first 20 minutes to lead the Gaels with nine points a piece. The Maroon & Gold posted 13 made field goals in the first period, with 12 of them coming from distance. Casimir also netted four assists in the half while Svandrlik posted four rebounds.Â
Iona was able to grow the margin to 19 points on two occasions during the opening stages of the second half before the Crusaders (3-7) cut the deficit to nine points at 54-45 with 10:22 remaining in regulation. However, on the next possession Much converted a jumper and a free throw to push the lead to double-digits for good with just under 10 minutes remaining.Â
Casimir and Svandrlik along with Griffin helped the Gaels to a total of 48 points off the bench.Â
Jacob Grandison paced Holy Cross with 14 points in reserve minutes included 3-of-6 from long distance. Austin Butler added four treys for all 12 of his points while Jehyve Floyd controlled 10 rebounds and nine points. The Crusaders used 12 made 3-pointers of their own to stay within striking distance.
Iona continues the current road trip with the third of five straight games away from New Rochelle on Thursday with a 7 pm start at the University of Rhode Island.Â
