Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Behind 28 points off turnovers and 12 made 3-pointers, the Iona College men's basketball upended local rival Manhattan 72-51 earlier this evening inside the Hynes Center on ESPNU.
Deyshonee Much led the long-distance shooting effort for the Gaels (19-11, 12-7 MAAC) with five 3-poiners towards 19 points and four steals in 34 minutes. Jordan Washington notched his fourth straight and seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Schadrac Casimir and E.J. Crawford each reached double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Maroon & Gold matched a season-high of 13 steals, previously recorded against Drake, to help force 23 Jaseper (10-21, 5-15 MAAC) turnovers towards 28 points the other way. Zane Waterman led all scorers with 20 points for Manhattan while Aaron Walker Jr. came off the bench for 15 points, four assists, and three steals.
The first four field goals made by Iona to start the game came from beyond the arc towards a 13-5 early advantage. A 17-9 run from the Jaspers helped the visitors regain the lead at 24-22 with 8:25 remaining. However, a 20-5 run to end the half pushed the Gaels ahead 42-27 at the halftime break with a Washington layup capping off the run.
Much led all scorers with 12 points at the end of 20 minutes, shooting 4-of-5 from long distance to go along with two steals. Iona generated an 18-2 margin in points off turnovers and also shot 10-of-17 from beyond the arc as a team with Casimir adding three to Much's four makes.
The defensive effort continued into the second half for the Maroon & Gold as Manhattan was held to just eight made field goals, none from long distance, throughout the final 20 minutes. Jan Svandrlik led the effort of eight steals in the half by coming up with three of his own in just eight minutes.
Iona also held Manhattan's leading scorer (15.5 points per-game), Zavier Turner, to just two points on 1-of-10 shooting. The 23 Jasper turnovers were also the most forced by the Gaels on the season.
Looking ahead, the Maroon & Gold conclude the regular season by hosting Monmouth at 4:00 pm this Sunday. Prior to the game, Iona will honor and celebrate the senior class.
