Fordham Ekes By Iona In The Bronx, 3-2

BRONX, NY – Despite a pair of home runs for the program's all-time leader, the Iona College softball program fell to the Fordham, 3-2.

Hitting as the designated player in the three-spot, senior Kristen Turner gave the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead with her sixth homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning.

The lead held until the bottom of the fourth inning when Fordham scored two unearned runs against freshman starter Marnie Skinner.  The Rams got the bases loaded with one out, and after Skinner drew a fielder's choice to get within one out of escaping, sophomore Jordanna Storm reached base on a fielding error and runners crossed the plate.

Skinner got out of the inning on the next pitch, stranding runners on second and third.  Her day ended having gone four innings, allowing four hits, two runs, neither of which were earned.  She faced 18 batters and struck out three.

In the top of the sixth inning, Turner tied the game at 2-2 with her second solo round-tripper of the day.  She powered a 2-1 pitch the other way over the right center field wall, taking Skinner off the hook for the losing decision.

Junior Jessica Harkness came in relief of Skinner and went 2.1 innings.  She exited the game with one out in the seventh inning with runners on first and second base.  Sophomore Alana Evans came on in relief and immediately through a wild pitch to put the winning run just 60 feet away.  Just a pitch later, Ram senior Lindsay Mayer sealed Fordham's 3-2 win with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Iona had five team hits, two of which were Turner's dingers.  In addition, juniors Courtney Miller, Tori Danner and sophomore Hailey Thompson each had singles.

Fordham used three pitchers to hold the Gael offense in check and strike out seven total batters.

Tomorrow the Maroon & Gold return to action at home on Donald E. Walsh field when they host St. John's at 3:00 PM.
