#IWL Tops Monmouth In 2017 Finale

NEW ROCHELLE, NY  - The Iona College Lacrosse program finished the 2017 campaign on a high note, toppling the Monmouth Hawks 13-10. Seniors Erin Pugh and Katelyn Noschese ended their careers in style, each scoring two goals. Fellow seniors Brianne Towey, Kristian Wasdick, Zoe Mazzulli, Grace Celona, Rachelle Serafini also suited up in their final appearance as a member of the Maroon & Gold.

Junior Jenna Tolzmann scored a game-high four goals and junior Pamela Giordano led the game with six points coming on three goals and three assists. in net, sophomore Shannon McCaffrey played the entirety, stopping seven Hawks' shots.

The Gaels stormed ahead form the opening draw, scoring three in the first five minutes of the contests. Celona found Giordano in front, and was matched by Tolzmann's 15th of the season just 1:08 later. Hager connected off a feed from Noschese to put the Gaels up by three. The Hawks had an answer of their own, scoring the game's next six goals over a 17 minute span as the Gaels fell behind by a pair.

Noschese stopped the run with her 15th goal of the season off a dish from Pugh to pull within one. With 2:19 remaining, Monmouth went back up by two before Tolzmann found the back of the net just 18 ticks later. A goal by Pugh in the waining seconds brought Iona within one, 8-7 at the end of the half.

The Maroon & Gold continued to roll in beginning of the second frame, with Giordano and Pugh added to the scoresheet, giving the Gaels their first lead in over 19 minutes. A Monmouth goal with 24:38 to play knotted the score at 8-8 but was quickly answered by junior Kaitlyn Becker's sixth tally of the season. Giordano and Tolzmann scored the next two goals in the following minutes, matching Iona's largest lead of the game. After Monmouth scored with 20:38 remaining, the game remained scoreless for seven minutes when Tolzmann notched her 26th goal of the season to give Iona a 12-9 lead.

The Hawks pulled to within two with 5:48 remaining, but with two minutes later, Noschese tallied the final goal of her collegiate career putting the game in hand.

Iona finishes the season at 2-6 in the MAAC, falling short of the conference championships after appearing as the sixth seed a season prior.

Senior Erin Pugh concludes her Iona career ranking second all-time in goals, and goals-per-game and shots on goal. She also ranks third in draw controls and sixth in caused turnovers.
