NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College basketball team used a balance attack along with efficient shooting to upend Rider this afternoon 91-64 during MAAC action inside the Hynes Center.
With the win, the Gaels (11-7, 5-1 MAAC) sweep the past four-game homestand before traveling to Monmouth on Friday.
The Maroon & Gold shot 58.2 percent (32-for-55) from the field in the victory that included 16-of-28 (57.1 percent) from beyond the arc while the team dished out 21 assists.
Rickey McGill led the ball movement effort with nine assists to go along with 13 points.
Schadrac Casimir scored 15 points to lead five players in double-figures as
Deyshonee Much chipped in 14 points and
E.J. Crawford and
Jan Svandrlik combined for 22 points with six made 3-pointers.
Rider (11-7, 4-2 MAAC) created the early advantage with a lead as large nine points in the early going and led by as many as eight points nearly nine minutes in. Trailing 23-15, Iona put together a 13-4 run to claim its first lead since the first minute.
Three ties throughout the rest of the first half pushed the momentum back-and-forth before Svandrlik pushed Iona ahead 44-40 at the break. Casimir and Much led the Gaels with nine points apiece while McGill tallied six assists.
A layup from
Gavin Kensmil pushed the lead to double-digits for good for the hosts with 10:41 left as the Gaels shot 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from the field in the final 20 minutes compared to just 37.9 percent (11-for-29) for the Broncs. An 8-0 run closed out the game for the Maroon & Gold with Svandrlik finishing his day 4-for-4 from long distance to cap off the run at 91-64.
Iona was able to take advantage of 20 Rider turnovers in the contest, generating 28 points off those while the bench scored 38 points in the effort.
The Gaels return to the road this Friday with a 7 pm MAAC contest at Monmouth before returning home next Sunday to host Canisius.
