NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Canisius held off a late run from the Iona College men's basketball team this afternoon to earn an 84-82 MAAC win on the road to improve to 7-1 in the conference standings.
The Griffs (13-8, 7-1 MAAC) built a 10-point margin with five minutes left to play in regulation, a large enough margin to keep the Gaels (12-8, 6-2 MAAC) in the deficit despite cutting the advantage to one point with nine seconds remaining. After
Rickey McGill brought the game to one point at 83-82, Isaiah Reese made the second of a pair of free throws following a flagrant foul. Canisius was able to run the clock to zero following the free throw attempt and close out the win, taking the season series against the Maroon & Gold in the process.
Reese led five players in double-figures for Canisius with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jermaine Crumpton added 18 points and seven rebounds while Jibreel Faulkner came off the bench for 13 points behind a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc. The Griffs tallied 25 assists and just six turnovers on 32 made field goals that included a 15 made 3-pointers. Additionally, the visitors generated 18 points off of 16 Iona turnovers.
Deyshonee Much went 8-for-12 on field goals for the afternoon towards a team-high 18 points.
Rickey McGill notched his second double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 12 assists while
TK Edogi also added a double-double, his fifth of the season, with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
E.J. Crawford posted 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. In the effort, the Gaels garnered a 42-28 in points in the paint.Â
Canisius built its largest lead of the game of 11 points in the first half with 7:47 to go until halftime before Iona used a 15-5 run to trim the deficit to one point following a McGill 3-pointer. The Griffs went into the break with the two-point lead of 44-42 before
Schadrac Casimir gave the hosts a one-point advantage of 59-58 with a 3-pointer in the second half. However, a Crumpton dunk on the next possession gave Canisius the lead for good and helped build the double-digit lead good enough to secure the win down the stretch.
Iona returns to action next Saturday at Nassau Coliseum as part of the MAACÂ tripleheader. The Gaels are scheduled to face Manhattan at 7 pm in Uniondale, NY, the final contest of the day.
