STATEN ISLAND, NY – An early first half deficit was too much to overcome for the Iona Gaels (4-16, 0-4 NEWPC), dropping a Wednesday night contest to Wagner 19-9.
Quinn Lloyd nothced two goals on seven shots and drew three kickouts and
Jason Hill tallied two goals and an assist on two shots.
Patrick Hudak,
Andrew Brozovic,
Brett Hofer and
Dalton Hansten each scored once. Hudak also drew four kickouts and added a steal. In net,
Jorge Andres Torres made seven saves and collected two steals with
Michael Banks playing one quarter and making two saves.
In the first quarter, the Seahawks notched the first five goals before Hofer put the Gaels on the board with his 21st score of the season with 2:22 remaining. Two Wagner scores over the next minute put the Gaels in a six-score deficit after the period.
The teams played even in the second frame, each scoring three. After the Seahawks took an 8-1 lead, Hudak tallied his team-leading 38th score. Lloyd answered another Wagner tally to pull the Gaels back within six, before Hill cut the lead to 9-4. Wagner closed out the quarter scoring in the final seconds.
Wagner outscored the Maroon & Gold 6-1 in the third frame, with Iona's lone tally coming from Lloyd with 1:08 to play. Iona conceded two goals in the final minute of play to fall behind 16-5. Hill and Brozovic tallied the final two Iona scores.
The Gaels and Seahawks will meet again on Saturday at the Harvard Invite. The game begins at 6:30 and can be streamed on ESPN+.
