NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Leading by three with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Iona Water Polo team (4-19, 0-5 NEWPC) was stormed by No. 12 Princeton in the remainder, outscoring the Gaels 7-1 in an 11-8 defeat at the Hynes Center on senior night.
German Rodriguez and
Andrew Brozovic paced the Gaels with two goals each.
Patrick Hudak,
Quinn Lloyd,
Brett Hofer and
Dalton Hansten each scored once. Hansten also added three steals.
In net,
Jorge Andres Torres made 10 stops and collected three steals.
Iona was outshot 33-26 for the contest and were 2-8 on the powerplay while the Tigers connected on 4-of-7.

Hansten struck first for the Gaels 1:17 into the match but was countered by Princeton 18 seconds later. Just over two minutes later, Rodriguez notched his 24
th goal of his early career to put Iona ahead, but the Tigers responded 44 ticks later to tie the score at 2-2.
After Princeton took a 3-2 lead one minute into the second quarter, the Gaels got hot, scoring five of the next six goals. Hudak and Rodriguez teamed up to put Iona ahead, and after a Tigers' response, a tally by Hofer and a pair of strikes by Brozovic gave Iona a 7-4 lead with five minutes left to play in the third quarter.
Princeton gained momentum and the Iona offense cooled over the next 10 minutes, with the opposition scoring the next six goals before Lloyd answered with 3:07 left in regulation to pull Iona back within two, 10-8. The Tigers scored with 2:19 to play and the Gaels were held off the scoresheet for the remainder.
Tomorrow, the Maroon & Gold will head to the Bronx to take on Salem (10:00 AM) and Connecticut College (5:00 PM) hosted by Fordham.
