Brian Kelly Picks Up 600th win, Banks Breaks Saves Record In Bronx Sweep

Bronx, NY – In a record-breaking day for the Maroon & Gold, the Iona Water Polo squad (6-19, 0-5) secured victories over Salem International and Connecticut College at Fordham University. In Iona's win over Salem International, head coach Brian Kelly earned his 600th win between both the men's and women's programs. Against Connecticut College, Michael Banks broke Iona's single-game saves record, stopping an outstanding 25 shots.
 
Game 1: Iona 10, Salem International 9
 
After putting together a strong performance Friday night at the Hynes Center against the No. 12 Princeton TIgers, the Maroon & Gold held another tight battle with the Salem International TIgers, holding off the opposition 10-9. The teams were never separated by more than two goals in the contest.
 
Iona outshot the Tigers 28-20 and went 5-12 on the powerplay.
 
Patrick Hudak attempted a team-high 10 shots, connecting on three and drew a team-high four kickouts. Andrew Brozovic tallied a hat-trick on six shots. German Rodriguez connected on two goals and Justin Ginsberg and Philip Wachowski each scored once. Jorge Andres Torres made 11 saves and added a steal in the victory.
 
Iona fell in a quick 2-0 hole four minutes into the contest before Brozovic brought the Gaels within one with 3:44 to play in the first quarter. After Ginsberg tied the score, The Tigers scored the next two including one in the last second.
 
Iona struck back in the second quarter, outscoring Salem International 3-1. Hudak brough the Gaels within one and Rodriguez connected on a pair to give Iona a 5-4 lead. With 1:26 left in the half, the Tigers tied the score and the teams went into the break tied 5-5.
 
Iona fell behind 57 seconds into the third quarter, but Hudak took control scoring the next two and Brozovic put the Gaels up by two. With two seconds left, the Tigers cut the Iona advantage to 8-7.
 
Brozovic put the Gaels up by a pair in the fourth quarter but was answered by a Tigers score with 5:14 to play. Wachowski put the Gaels ahead by two with 1:44 to play but Salem International took advantage of an Iona ejection to cut the lead to 10-9 with 45 ticks to play. Iona held the Tigers off in the final seconds to grab the victory and secure Brian Kelly's 600th win. Kelly is already holds the record for most wins by a head coach in Iona history.
 
Game 2: Iona 13, Connecticut College 6
 
Junior Michael Banks put on a dominant performance in a rematch with the Connecticut College Camels, stopping an Iona-best 25 shots in a 13-6 victory. The Maroon & Gold did not relinquish a strong 8-2 first half lead in large part due to Banks.
 
On the offensive end, Hudak scored four more goals on five shots and drew five kickouts. Dalton Hansten tallied a pair on three shots and collected two steals. The Gaels received goals from five other members including Quinn Lloyd, Justin Ginsberg, Jason Hill, German Rodriguez and Philip Wachowski.
 
Hansten put the Gaels up just over a minute into the game and the Camels knotted the score 20 seconds later. From there, Iona went on a 7-1 run over the next 13 minutes. Hudak scored a pair and Ginsberg put Iona up by three at the end of the first quarter. Lloyd tallied two more and Hudak connected to give Iona a six-goal advantage.  With 33 ticks left in the half, the Camels stopped the Iona run but 19 seconds later, Hansten put Iona up 8-2 at the break.
 
Iona outscored Connecticut College 3-2 in the third quarter, with Iona getting goals from Rodriguez, Hudak and Feeley. Wachowski and Hill each scored in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

The Maroon & Gold look to keep the momentum going at the Hynes Center Wednesday in an NEWPC battle with St. Francis Brooklyn beginning at 7:30 PM.
