BUFFALO, NY – The Iona College volleyball team defeated Canisius in straight sets (25-16, 27-25, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon to conclude an undefeated weekend in Western New York. The Gaels tied a program best with their 13
th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona blitzed out to a 5-1 lead against Canisius in the first set. The Golden Griffins called a time out but the Maroon & Gold continued to rush out to a 10-3 advantage. Canisius rallied back to get within two at 13-11 but the Gaels vaulted forward again with a 5-0 run. The cushion pushed Iona to a 25-16 first set win.
Iona had a match-best .345 in the first set with 15 kills and five attacking errors.
In a mirror of the first set, the Gaels jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Iona led by as many as nine but Canisius went on a 6-1 run to bring it back to within striking distance at 21-17. Emma Rose to tie the match at 25. Iona wouldn't relinquish after getting the serve as Connolly concluded the game with a pair of kills while sophomore
Taylor Cole served.
Iona hit a match-low .184 in the second set. The Gaels had eight more attack attempts than the Golden Griffins.
Following the Intermission, Canisius served first and held a lead for the majority of the set. They had six point leads on three occasions but the Maroon & Gold rallied to tie the third set at 16. Iona and Canisius traded points until the Gaels finally pulled away with the 25-22 victory on back-to-back kills from Connolly and sophomore
Jamie Smith.
With the win, Iona's magic number to clinch the 2018 MAAC Regular Season title is down to one.
STATISTICAL NUGGETS
- Connolly led the Maroon & Gold with 14.5 points, 14 kills and a .565 hitting percentage. She also contributed with eight digs.
- Senior Claire Archibald recorded another double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. She has a team-leading 16 double-doubles this season.
- Rose had a team-best 42 assists. The Gaels had 47 assists and in comparison, Canisius had just 28 helpers.
- Senior Jessica Paolucci had a team-best 16 digs. Iona had 52 digs compared to 36 for the Golden Griffins.
- The Gaels had five service errors. It is the lowest single-game total since Aug. 26 against Eastern Illinois.
- Iona had seven blocks, its second-highest total in a three-set match this season. The Gaels had 10.0 blocks vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) on Aug. 25.
- Iona's 13 MAAC wins is tied for a program best. It previously reached that mark in 2013.
