LOYOLA, CA – In the opening contest of the Gary Troyer Tournament, the Iona water polo squad broke out the offense, totaling it's most goals in almost two years in a 19-11 victory over Caltech. In the afternoon contest, the Gaels fell to La Verne 8-5.
Game 1: Iona 19, Caltech 11
In a game that saw 30 total goals scored, including six by freshman
German Rodriguez, the Gaels prevailed over Caltech 19-11 to grab it's fourth win of the season.
Patrick Hudak and
Brett Hofer each tallied a hat-trick and
Quinn Lloyd tallied a pair after scoring a hat-trick yesterday.
Justin Ginsberg,
Michael Feeley,
Jason Hill, Phillip Wachowski and
Dalton Hansten each found the back of the net in the victory. Hill and Rodriguez also collected three steals.
In net,
Jorge Andres Torres made five saves and allowed four goals while
Michael Banks stopped one shot.
Iona opened up strong, outscoring the Beavers 5-1 after eight minutes. Hudak opened the scoring followed by a powerplay goal by Wachowski. A Hofer goal was sandwiched between two scores by Rodriguez to conclude the period.
In the second quarter, Rodriguez and Hofer answered a Caltech goal before the Beavers cut into the Iona lead. Ginsberg and Hofer scored two goals in the final minute but a goal with three ticks left brought the Iona lead down to 9-4.
The offense continued to roll in the third quarter with goals from Rodriguez, Hill, Lloyd, Feeley, Hudak and another from Rodriguez respectively.
Iona concluded the contest scoring four more from Lloyd, Hofer, Hansten and Rodriguez's sixth and final score.
The Gaels drew nine kickouts and were ejected six times and collected 13 steals.
Game 2: La Verne 8, Iona 5
In an early defensive battle, La Verne and Iona held strong in the first three quarters but the Leopards pulled away in the fourth quarter to take an 8-5 win over the Gaels.
Hudak tallied another hat-trick on six shots. Lloyd added a goal and an assist on seven shots. Hofer scored one goal and dished out one assist.
Torres played the entirety of the game, making 16 saves and adding a steal. The Gaels drew seven kickouts and were also ejected seven times.
As a team, the Gaels took 34 shots but were only able to put five in the back of the net. Iona connected on 2-of-7 man-up opportunities.
Iona led 2-1 after eight minutes, receiving goals from Hudak and Lloyd. Eight minutes later, the teams went into the break knotted at three with the Gaels' lone goal coming from Breff Hofer with 1:11 remaining.
Hudak opened the scoring in the third quarter but two Leopards' goals within 1:15 put the opposition ahead before Hudak answered with 1:07 to play. The teams went into the fourth quarter knotted at 5-5.
The Leopards held the Gaels scoreless in the final frame.
Iona concludes the Gary Troyer tournament tomorrow with contests against Fresno Pacific at 12:00 PM EST and Redlands beginning at approximately 4:00 PM EST.
