CLAREMONT, CA - The Iona College water polo squad concluded the Gary Troyer Tournament in Claremont, California Saturday with five-goal defeats to Fresno Pacific and Redlands.
GAME 1: Fresno Pacific 15, Iona 10
After trailing by just two in the second half, the Gaels were unalbe to keep up with the offensive prowess of Fresno Pacific, falling in the morning contest 15-10. The freshmen led the way in scoring with
Justin Ginsberg and
German Rodriguez each tallying a pair of goals.
Patrick Hudak,
Quinn Lloyd,
Andrew Brozovic,
Brett Hofer and Phillip Wachowski each scored once in the defeat. In net,
Jorge Andres Torres stopped 10 shots.
The Gaels were outshot 34-29, and drew nine kickouts. Iona was 2-7 on the man-up advantage.
Two minutes into the game, Rodriguez found Ginsberg to give to the Gaels an early 1-0 advantage but Fresno Pacific answered back with two more. The Gaels went back ahead after Wachowski and Hudak scored, but with four seconds left, the opposition knotted the score at three apiece. The Gaels fell into a two-goal deficit at the half, with the goals coming from Ginsberg and Rodriguez respectively.
Fresno Pacific continued to roll in the third quarter, outscoring Iona 5-1, putting Iona in a 12-6 hole. The Gaels tried to mount a comeback, scoring four of the quarter's first five goals to bring the deficit down to three, 13-10 with 2:32 to play. The Maroon & Gold were unable to find the back of the net for the remainder and gave up a pair of goals to conclude the match.
GAME 2: Redlands 13, Iona 7
The Iona offense had a tough time gaining momentum through the first three quarters of the afternoon against Redlands, scoring only four in the first 24 minutes in a 13-7 defeat. Hudak and Lloyd scored a pair and Hil, Brozovic and Wachowski scored once.
In goal, Torres played the entirety, making 13 saves and collecting two steals.
Iona was outshot 33-23, but drew 14 Redlands kickouts. However, the Maroon & Gold were unable to cash in on man-up opportunites, connecting on only one.
Brozovic was the first to find the back of the net in the first frame, but Iona was held scoreless until two minutes into the second quarter when Lloyd connected for his first of the game. With the Gaels trailing 4-2 at the start of the third quarter, Lloyd tallied his second to bring the deficit to within one, 4-3. After two Redlands' goals, Hudak notched a goal before the opposition scored five unanswered to pull away.
Iona was outscored 5-3 in the fourth quarter. With 2:15 to play in regulation, Hill connected and was later followed by Hudak and Wachowski in the final minute.
