Gaels' 12 game MAAC wining streak snapped

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College volleyball program had its 12 game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference winning streak snapped in five sets (12-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-23, 16-18) against Rider on Sunday afternoon.

Both of this year's contests between the Gaels are the Broncs have gone to five sets. Iona won at the Hynes Center (25-27, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13) back on Oct. 3.

The Gaels were blitzed in the first and third sets by the Broncs. In the first game, which went in Rider's favor 25-12, Iona hit .125 as a team while the Broncs clocked in at .600. They had 16 kills and just one attack error on 25 attempts. In the third set which Rider won 25-13, Iona had a match-low six kills and matched it with six attacking errors. Iona rebounded from both non-memorable sets with wins to ensure the match went to a five set. In both the second and fourth set, Rider had a match-high eight attacking errors. Iona was still out-killed in each game by one.

The only set where Iona won the total kill comparison was the fifth, but it was Rider who eked out an 18-16 finale to upend the top-seeded Gaels. Iona had match-point at 14-13 after a kill from senior Mia Bonsignore. Iona committed a service error and Rider got the advantage with a block from Anilee Sher and Perry Williams.
