LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Iona College volleyball program had its 12 game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference winning streak snapped in five sets (12-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-23, 16-18) against Rider on Sunday afternoon.
Both of this year's contests between the Gaels are the Broncs have gone to five sets. Iona won at the Hynes Center (25-27, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13) back on Oct. 3.
MATCH RECAP
The Gaels were blitzed in the first and third sets by the Broncs. In the first game, which went in Rider's favor 25-12, Iona hit .125 as a team while the Broncs clocked in at .600. They had 16 kills and just one attack error on 25 attempts. In the third set which Rider won 25-13, Iona had a match-low six kills and matched it with six attacking errors. Iona's hitting percentage was nil while the Broncs attacked a .286.
Iona rebounded from both non-memorable sets with wins to ensure the match went to a five set. In both the second and fourth set, Rider had a match-high eight attacking errors. Iona was still out-killed in each game by one.
The only set where Iona won the total kill comparison was the fifth, but it was Rider who eked out an 18-16 finale to upend the top-seeded Gaels. Iona had match-point at 14-13 after a kill from senior
Mia Bonsignore. Iona committed a service error and Rider got the advantage with a block from Anilee Sher and Perry Williams. The final two points of the match came on a kill from Alexa Shello and Maroon & Gold attacking error.
STATISTICAL NUGGETS
- Iona had both of its lowest scoring sets in the Sunday's loss against the Broncs.
- The Gaels .135 team hitting percentage is its second lowest of the season. The lowest came against Eastern Illinois on Aug. 26.
- Iona tied a season-best with 11 blocks as a team. The mark was also reached against Quinnipiac (Sept. 22) and the first contest against Rider (Oct. 3). Sophomore Jamie Smith and junior Karla Johnson both tied career-highs with seven blocks. Each was a season-high as well.
- Senior Claire Archibald was the team-leader with 15 kills. She also had a season-best four service aces.
- Junior Jessica Paolucci had 22 digs; she was one of three players with double-digit digs. Archibald had 17 and senior Emma Rose notched 10.
UP NEXT
The Gaels have the final weekend of the regular season beginning on Saturday, Nov. 10 against Marist and ending on Sunday, Nov. 11 against Siena on senior day. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hynes Athletics Center.
