CHARLESTON, SC – Longwood defeated the Iona College softball team in the finale of the Cougar Classic, 8-0. Sophomore Ciarra DiGuilio had the only hit for the Maroon & Gold while six lancers had at least one base-knock.
Sophomore Marnie Skinner was credited for the loss, dropping her season-record to 1-1. She went 3.2 innings and allowed eight total runs and seven earned runs while earning two strikeouts. The Lancers had four extra base-hits.
Freshman Sydney Backstrom earned the win for Longwood by going four innings and allowing no hits with three strikeouts. She retired all 12 batters she faced. Rookie Arleigh Wood came on in relief in the fifth inning and allowed Iona's lone hit. The Longwood tandem threw a first pitch strike against every Maroon & Gold batter.
Iona's next tournament is the District Classic held in Washington, DC on the first weekend of March. The Gaels are set to compete against Howard, UMBC, Columbia and Virginia.
