PROVIDENCE, RI – Despite leading at halftime 5-4, the Iona College lacrosse team (5-4) was unable to maintain offense in the second half against Brown on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bears 10-6.
Jenna Tolzmann netted a team-high three goals on five shots. The Gaels received a goal from
Pamela Giordano,
Maureen Murphy and
Emma Hager. In net,
Shannon McCaffrey stopped 11 Bears' shots.
The Gaels mustered 27 shots, with 19 coming on goal and controlled five out of 18 draws.
Brown scored the game's first goal 1:23 into the game. Hager and Gironda each attempted shots before Tolzmann connected with 22:51 remaining to knot the score at 1-1. With 17:28 to go, the Bears scored a pair goals 41 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead. The Gaels went on a tear of four straight goals over the next 15 minutes, receiving tallies from Hager, Tolzmann, Murphy, and Giordano respectively. With 35 seconds remaining, the Bears cut into the Iona advantage, as the Maroon & Gold went into the break up 5-4.
Although the Gaels took 12 shots in the second half, the team were outscored 6-1 with the lone goal coming from Tolzmann. After Brown tied the score at 5-5 less than a minute into the second frame, the Gaels took five shots before Brown took it's only lead of the day with 23:42 to go. The Bears scored three more unanswered goals over the next 20 minutes before Tolzmann brought the score back within three, 9-6 with 3:15 remaining. The host went back up by four with 2:10 remaining to complete the scoring.
The Gaels begin MAAC play on Saturday, Mar. 24 when they open up at Niagara.
