WEST POINT, NY – The Iona College softball program dropped its second straight non-conference contest in as many days against the Army Black Knights late Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 5-1. Army stole an opponent-high nine bases and outhit the Maroon & Gold nine to four.
The top four batters in the Black Knights batting order went a combined 7-for-14 with four runs scored, two runs batted in, two walks, and six stolen bases. Leadoff hitter sophomore Amelia Trotter went 3-for-4 with one run scored and three stolen bases. Cleanup hitter junior Carrie Reilly went had two hits in four at-bats with one run scored and one hits.
Iona's four hits came from junior Marisa Gergel, sophomore Taylor Brown, senior Tori Danner, and junior Kimberly Chiapparelli. Senior Courtney Miller drove home Iona's lone run with a fielder's choice in the fourth inning.
Freshman Samantha Bender began the game for the Gaels and went three innings allowing four earned runs on six hits and one walk. Senior Jessia Harkness came on in relief and allowed one unearned run. Both struck out one Black Knight batter.
The Maroon & Gold return to conference action on Friday afternoon against Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 PM for the QU Softball Field.
