NEW ROCHELLE, NY – A last-minute goal by the Jaspers completed a comeback victory over Iona, as the Lacrosse team fell 8-7 to Manhattan. This is Iona's third one-goal conference defeat in five contests.
In the defeat, Giordano tied a season-best in goals with five on nine shots. She also became the eighth Gael in program history to surpass 100 goals for her career.
Jenna Tolzmann was all over the field, totaling one goal on ten shots, four caused turnovers and three draw controls. She also grabbed eight ground balls, which put her in a tie for fifth-most in a game in program history.
Katelyn Noschese tallied a goal on six shots.
Gabriella Di Domizio caused three turnovers and reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week
Shannon McCaffrey made seven saves.
Tolzmann and Giordano connected with goals within 35 seconds of each other to open the scoring. With 15:59 remaining in the half, the Jaspers scored a pair before Giordano went on a tear of three goals over six minutes of play. With 3:27 left in the opening frame, Manhattan completed the scoring, as the Maroon & Gold went into the break up 5-3.
Manhattan knotted the score up with two tallies in the first five minutes of the second half. Giordano netted her 40
th goal with 20 minutes remaining to tie her career-high and the eighth most scored in a single-season.
After Manhattan tied the score at 6-6, Noschese tallied her 22
nd goal of the season to put the Gaels ahead. The game was tied again with 5:34 to play after a Manhattan tally.
With 4:26 remaining,
Sarah Strange caused a huge turnover on a free position attempt by the Jaspers. Tolzmann was then unable to connect on a free position of her own, as it was stopped by Manhattan's Nikki Prestiano. After an Iona turnover and a successful clear by the Jaspers, Manhattan was able to fire one past McCaffrey with :39 seconds to play. Di Domizio controlled the final draw but Becker's final attempt was the 16
th save for Prestiano.
For the game, Iona outshot the Jaspers 34-25 and held a 23-15 ground ball advantage. Manhattan stopped 16 shots opposed to Iona's 7. The Gaels were 2-9 on free-position shots.
The Gaels will look to rebound next Wednesday at home against Fairfield in Iona's first home broadcast on ESPN+.
