FAIRFIELD, CT – Playing in the program's second ever MAAC Tournament, the No. 3 seeded Gaels fell to No. 6 Fairfield 14-5 Saturday at Rafferty Stadium. The Gaels received one goal apiece from
Pamela Giordano,
Jenna Tolzmann,
Kaitlyn Becker,
Maureen Murphy and
Libby Miller.
Shannon McCaffrey made 14 stops in net.
Gabriella Di Domizio added four more caused turnovers to her career total, and
Caleigh Gunn added three.
Iona was outshot by Fairfield 38-30, and the Stags held a 17-13 advantage in ground balls. The Gaels were successful on 18-22 clears and controlled 8-20 draws.
The Stags took the early advantage, finding the back of the net 1:35 into the contest. One minute later, Murphy took advantage of a Fairfield turnover and notched her 11
th goal of the season. After five minutes of the teams trading shots, the Stags regained the lead. The Gaels had their chances over the next 10 minutes, as Fairfield's Paulina DiFatta stopped a Murphy attempt, and a
Carley Pellechia shot hit the crossbar. After Murphy was denied again, Becker rattled one of the post. Iona was able to find the back of the net with 13:38 to play as Tolzmann skipped one past the Fairfield netminder on a free-position attempt to tie the score at 2-2.
The Gaels were held off the scoreboard for the next ten minutes as the Stags tacked on three more goals before Giordano rocketed a shot between the legs of DiFatta to bring Iona back within two. Fairfield added two insurance goals in the final 17 seconds of the half to take a 7-3 advantage into the break.
The Stags defense continued to shut down the Maroon & Gold in the second half and the offense continued to tack on three goals in 12 minutes. With 16:12 to play, Becker broke Iona's 17:54 scoreless drought with her 17
th tally of the season and was followed by Miller two minutes later to cut the Gaels deficit to 10-5. Iona was held scoreless for the remaining 14:33 of play.
Iona's season concludes after totaling it's second most wins in a season, finishing 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the MAAC. The Gaels will say goodbye to seniors

Giordano concludes her Iona career placing fifth on the all-time list with 113 goals, second in shots attempted (332), and second in shots on goal per-game (5.82). Her 49 goals this season ranked third in program history for one season.
Tolzmann, who has started the most games in program history (68), also finishes ninth in goals (86), eighth in shots (243), fifth in ground balls (139), and third in caused turnovers (76).
Di Domizio ends her career with the Maroon & Gold as the sole leader in career games played (70), career caused turnovers (128), caused turnovers per-game (1.83), caused turnovers in a single-season (53), most caused turnovers in a single game (7), and eighth in ground balls (49).
McCaffrey's stellar season concludes with her having a program-best eight wins and 173 saves. Her 9.57 GAA and .500 save percentage both ranked 14th in the NCAA.
