STORRS, CT – The Iona College volleyball program dropped its match against the UConn Huskies in four sets (25-21, 25-23, 26-24, 25-14) on Friday evening. Freshman Jamie Smith and senior Claire Archibald both recorded double-doubles in the loss.
The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year of the year put down a team-best 13 kills in addition to a season-high 10 assists. Archibald brought forward 11 kills and mustered out 11 digs. Redshirt junior Jessica Paolucci had a season-best 28 digs and senior Emma Rose dished out a team-best 30 assists.
Connecticut's Caylee Parker had a match-best 16 kills on 40 attacks and Emma Turner distributed 46 assists. Husky Isabelle Peterson and senior Gael Mia Bonsignore each had a match-best six blocks.
This year's contest against UConn shows the massive improvement compared to last year. In 2017 the Huskies took down the Gaels in straight sets (25-12, 25-11, 25-16). The Maroon & Gold took the third on Friday night with utter dominance at the net. They recorded 20 kills and had a .395 hitting percentage and .465 kill percentage.
Iona continues The Dog Pound Challenge tomorrow against the New Hampshire Wildcats. First serve is set for 12 PM.
