NEW LONDON, CT - The Iona College water polo team took to the pool at Lott Natatorium for a trio of contests Sunday at host Connecticut College. The Maroon & Gold took the first game over Penn State Behrend 19-4, fell to Cal Lutheran 11-10 in overtime and captured the final game over the host Camels 16-9.
Game 1: Iona 19, Penn State Behrend 4
The Gaels took control early over Penn State Behrend in the morning contest, holding the Lions to only 4 goals and putting up 19.
Quinn Lloyd scored six goals on eight shots wile adding three assists.
German Rodriguez tallied a hat trick and
Patrick Hudak,
Michael Feeley and
Andrew Brozovic netted two each.
Justin Ginsberg,
Cullen Seipp,
Brett Hofer and
Philip Wachowski found the back of the net once.
Dalton Hansten collected three assists in the game.
In goal,
Jorge Andres Torres made six saves on 10 shot attempts and
Michael Banks collected 11 saves and allowed three goals.
Game 2: Cal Lutheran 11, Iona 10 (OT)
Despite an early first quarter lead, Iona was unable to hold on late, and fell to Cal Lutheran 11-10 in overtime.
Hudak led the Gaels in scoring, netting three on six shots along with two drawn kickouts and a steal. Brozovic and Hofer tallied a pair of goals with Lloyd, Wachowski and Hansten scoring one each.
Torres played the entirety, making nine saves and collecting three steals.
Iona opened up a 4-1 lead after eight minutes, receiving two tallies from Hudak along with a pair from Brozovic. The second quarter saw the Maroon and Gold concede three goals but also tallied goals from Hofer, Wachowski and Hansten, as they took a 7-5 lead into the break.
Cal Lutheran cut the lead to 8-7 after three quarters with the lone tally coming from Hofer.
After Cal Lutheran tied the game at 8-8 with 3:37 remaining, Ginsberg knotted the score 30 seconds later. With 2:45 to play, the opposition took the lead again but was answered by Hudak. Cal Lutheran tied the score at 10-10 with 1:12 to play and the teams remained knotted into overtime.
Both teams were held off the score sheet in the first overtime period but Cal Lutheran took the final lead with 1:25 left to play and Iona was unable to answer.
Game 3: Iona 16, Connecticut College 9
After a tightly contested battle in the first half that saw the Gaels lead by one, Iona ran away in the second half, holding the host Camels to only three goals in the second half to take a 16-9 win in Sunday's finale.
Iona found themselves down 5-4 after the opening eight minutes. Brozovic opened the scoring 1:17 into the game and was followed by
Quinn Lloyd. After the Camels put one on the scoreboard, Hofer put the Gaels back up by two. Connecticut College scored the next three before Wachowski netted the score at four. The Camels scored in the final seconds to take the lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Gaels outscored the Camels 3-1 in the second quarter, receiving goals from Wachowski, Hudak and Brozovic.
Iona ratcheted up the offense the third quarter, taking a commanding 14-8 lead after 24 minutes. Iona scored the first six goals before the Camels rallied for a pair.
The Maroon & Gold concluded the game scoring two of the three final scores.

The Gaels will have a 10-day break before opening up NEWPC play on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at St. Francis Brooklyn
