NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College volleyball program fell to Rider University in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. The Broncs spoiled the Gaels' Hynes Athletics Center opener with a four set (16-25, 25-21, 20-25, 10-25) decision.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona and Rider bounced between points at the start of the match. The Broncs took a three-point lead, 12-9, on a block on senior
Karla Johnson's attack. Iona brought it back to within one, but the tide turned when Rider won the serve leading 15-13. The Gaels couldn't figure out Pamela Loh's serve as she carried the visitor on a seven-point run. Iona regained the serve trailing 22-14, but two service errors late in the ended the set, 25-16, in Rider's favor.
Junior
Jamie Smith had a team-best four kill and four digs in the opening set. Rookie
Julia Thomas and sophomore
Cassandra Patsos had two kills each. As a team the Maroon & Gold hit .114 I the first set. Rider hit .226 as a team and also took advantage of four Iona service errors.
The second set went the Gael way courtesy of a block party hosted by Smith. She had four of her six blocks in the set an as a team, Iona had six blocks in the frame. The turning point came when the score was tied, 17-17. Rider's Rachelle Runyon served and after a rally, rookie Julie Thomas and Smith combined for a block to put the Gaels ahead by one. Iona's lead doubled when the Gael tandem again defended the net and shutdown another Bronc kill attempt.

Karla Johnson put away a kill to cement a 25-21 set two victory.
Johnson had four kills in the second set. Thomas was effective with three kills on four swings. Redshirt senior
Jessica Paolucci had seven of her total 14 digs in the second set. Both Iona and Rider hit .091 in the frame.
The Gaels held a lead as large as five in the third set, but a Rider comeback culminated in the Broncs winning the game, 25-20. Rider's Danielle Blanco scored three straight points and cut Iona's lead to 15-13. The Broncs rose to within one on an Iona service error and then Morgan Romano tied the game at 17. Iona didn't lose fight as the set was tied at 20, but Rider won the final five points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Romano made her presence known in the third set with seven kills on 10 attempts. Rider hit .361 in the set compared to .132 for the Maroon & Gold. Johnson and Patsos had three kills in the third.
Rider closed out the match winning the fourth set, 25-10. Romano had eight kills in the frame as she and her teammates hits .400 to end the match. Loh had seven straight points serving, emulating the same trend from the first set. Iona hit -.077 in the fourth.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Wednesday's night was the first athletic event held in the newly revamped Hynes Athletics Center. It is the start of three week stretch where the Maroon & Gold play at home in seven of their next nine matches.
- Iona had 9.5 total blocks as a team, the second most this season. It's season high came on Sept. 29 against Niagara in five sets. All four of the Maroon & Gold's best blocking performances have come in MAAC play.
- Patsos had a team-best nine kills for the Gaels. Rookie Samantha Juran led the Maroon & Gold with 14 assists. Johnson and Smith had six blocks each.
- Smith had a near triple-double with eight kills, 11 digs and 12 assists. Her six blocks is also a season-best.
- Rider's Romano had a match high 22 kills on 46 swings attempts. She also finished with 15 digs and 25 points.
AROUND THE MAAC
- Manhattan travelled to Jersey City, NJ and beat Saint Peter's in the Yanitelli Center, 3-1.
