NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College Volleyball program made history on Sunday night with the first win for a Maroon & Gold program in the newly upgraded Hynes Athletics Center. The Gaels earned their third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season in four sets (22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-20) over the visiting Siena Saints.
Junior
Jamie Smith was the dominating player on the floor with her first career triple-double effort. She led the Maroon & Gold with 16 kills, 18 assists and 14 digs. Smith finished with a .469 hitting percentage and 21.5 points.
MATCH SUMMARY
The only set Siena won was the first set, 25-22. Isabella Ultsch had six kills on 10 swings to open things for the Saints. Iona's offense in the first set was carried by Smith with six kills on 13 swings. Senior
Karla Johnson also had a strong start with four kills for the Maroon & Gold. Both Siena and Iona had 15 kills in the first set.
There were just one tie and lead change in the first set. The Gaels led for the majority of the set up until the Saints tied the game at 18. Siena took the lead, 19-18, on a bad set from the Gaels. Iona tried to slow things down with a timeout, but Siena didn't relinquish the lead as the set rounded out.
Iona's most dominant effort in the match was in the second set. The Gaels hit .560 in the set and had an 80% sideout percentage. Iona held Siena to a .000 hitting percentage. No Saint player had more than two kills. Smith again let the Maroon & Gold with five kills on five attack attempts. Johnson had four kills and sophomore
Alessandra Brady had three.
The Maroon & Gold led from the get-got in set two. The took a 6-0 lead and eventually corralled it to a 17-7 advantage. Siena did fight of three set points before Smith ended the frame with a kill assisted by rookie
Julia Thomas.
The third set was the most back-and-forth of the match with eight ties and two lead changes. No team led by more than three until Siena's Maria Llinas put the Saints ahead of the Gaels, 14-11. Iona fell behind by as many as four, but battled back to tie the game at 17. Rookie
Samantha Juran's ace put Iona up 18-17. The Maroon & Gold kept the lead and Johnson gave her team a 2-1 lead in the match with a kill to end the set, 25-22.
Defense carried the Gaels in the fourth set. They have a match-best four blocks in the set, including a fantastic solo block from Smith that closed out the match at the Hynes Center. Offensively, the Maroon & Gold also excelled with a match-best .520 hitting percentage. Smith and Johnson each had four kills on nine combined swings.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Smith's 16 kills is her first double-digit effort since Sept., 29 against Niagara when she had a season-high 21 kills inn five sets.
- Smith's 18 assists is a season-high is a season-high. It's her highest helper total since her rookie season when she had 21 at Canisius.
- Smith's 12 digs is her second-highest total of the season, trailing on her 20-dig effort against Niagara.
- Yes, another Jamie Smith little nugget. Her triple double is the first for a Gael player since 2015 when Iona's all-time kill leader Claire Archibald had three such efforts in her rookie season.
- As a team, Iona had 54 kills, 51 assists, nine aces and hit .297. It's' the highest kill and assist total for the Gaels in a four-set match this season. The Maroon & Gold had double-digit kills in all four sets.
- Iona set a new season-best with four solo blocks. Smith had two solo blocks while Johnson and Thomas each had one.
- Iona improves its all-time record against Siena to 15-18. It is currently riding its longest ever winning streak against the Saints with five straight matches. The Gaels have won seven of the last eight.
AROUND THE MAAC
- Fairfield defeated Canisius in straight sets at Alumni Hall.
- Marist won on the road against Manhattan in four sets.
- Niagara took down Quinnipiac on the road in four sets.
UP NEXT
Iona's next two games are in Western New York against Niagara and Canisius. The Gaels serve up against the Purple Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 26 and then the Golden Griffins on Sunday, Oct. 27. Both matches begin at 1:00 p.m.
