Iona Ready for Opening Round Against Brown

Iona men's water polo faces Brown University in opening round of NWPC championship

Cambridge, MA - The Iona College men's water polo team is set to take on No. 3 Brown University in the opening round of the Northeast Water Polo Conference Championship on Friday, Novmeber, 22 at 4 p.m. The Gaels finished the regular season 6-21 and are the No. 6 seed entering the postseason.

During the regular season the Maroon & Gold dropped both match-ups against Brown. Iona fell 14-11 at home in the Hynes Center on October 5 and then a tough-fought 17-12 defeat in Providence, RI on November 3.

Sophomore German Rodriguez and rookie Mohamed Refaat combined for eight goals on 26 shots against the Bears this season. Senior Jorge Andres Torres recorded 15 saves and five steals between the first two meetings.

If the Gaels are able to secure a victory, they will play at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 23 where they battle nationally ranked and No. 2 NWPC seed, Princeton. If Brown wins then Iona will play in the fifth place game against the loser of MIT and St. Francis Brooklyn. The fifth place game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

All games are to be played at Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, MA, home of the top-seeded Harvard Crimson.
