Iona Falls in Regular Season Finale Against No. 20 Princeton

Princeton was able to take a commanding lead going into half time and never looked back.

Princeton NJ - Iona College men's water polo team drops regular season finale to No. 20 Prinecton 19-11, the Tigers are now 25-0 all-time against the Gaels. Princeton was able to take a commanding lead going into half time and never looked back.

MATCH SUMMARY

Freshman Lester Machado led Iona today with three goals and three assists to go along with two exclusions drawn and one block. Senior Philip Wachowski, sophomore German Rodriguez, and freshman Mohamed Refaat contributed two goals each and combined for three assists. The other two goals for the Gaels came from Junior Brett Hofer and senior Quinn Lloyd. The Maroon & Gold shot 41 percent, scoring 11 goals on 27 shots.

All three of Iona's goalies logged minutes in today's match. Senior Jorge Andres Torres started in net for the Gaels, he surrendered 13 goals while making four saves. Senior Michael Banks faced five shots allowing four goals and making one save. Freshman Kyle Laufenberg encountered five shots allowing two goals and made two saves. Together the three goalies made 7 saves on 27 shots.

As a team, the Gaels drew nine exclusions and forced four turnovers, while they committed nine fouls themselves, but the Princeton defense was tough causing nine turnovers. The third quarter turned out to be costly for Iona. The Gaels were out scored 8-1, the Tigers took a very comfortable lead of 17-6 going into the final eight minutes.

Princeton capitalized on seven of eight man up opportunities while the Maroon & Gold only took advantage of four out of seven opportunities.

UP NEXT

Now that the Gaels regular season has come to a close, they will look to make a run in the NWPC Playoffs two weeks from yesterday as they take on the No. 3 seed Friday Nov. 22 in the opening round.
