STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Iona College lacrosse program found little room in the second half today at Wagner, scoring one goal against a stout defense, falling to the Seahawks 14-4.
GAME SUMMARY
The Gaels held the Seahawks close in the first half, trailing 5-3 after 30 minutes. After Wagner scored just under a minute into the game, Keenan answered two minutes later to knot the score. The Seahawks scored the next three before
Leah Marshall broke the run with 13:41 remaining in the half. With 1:38 left in the half, Metcalf brought the Gaels within two at the break.
Wagner came out hot in the early stages of the second half, scoring three goals in four minutes to expand their advantage to 8-3.
Emma Rippon connected on a free-position attempt with 20 minutes to play but Wagner scored six additional goals and held the Gaels scoreless.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Shannon McCaffrey played the entirety, making 12 saves.
- Erin O'Donnell and Sarah Strange each grabbed three ground balls, with Strange also causing three turnovers.
- Iona was outshot in the game 41-13, with Wagner also racking up 17 free-position attempts
- 11 of Iona's 13 shot attempts came on target
- Wagner grabbed 22-37 ground balls and were successful on 23-24 clears.
- Iona controlled 8-19 draws, caused seven turnovers, and turned the ball over 19 times.
