Lacrosse Concludes Season With Defeat To Marist

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Despite opening the game with three straight scores, the Iona Lacrosse team was unable to hold on, coming as close as a three-goal deficit in the second half twice to the Marist Red Foxes, falling 15-10 in it's season finale. Seven of Iona's 10 goals were scored by seniors playing in their final contest, including Maureen Murphy's second career hat trick.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona rattled off three goals, all assisted, in the first seven minutes of play, coming from Danielle Keenan, Leah Marshall and Libby Miller. Emma Rippon added her second and third career assists and Katherine Meyer tallied her sixth. Marist responded with four straight goals over the next five minutes to take a two-goal advantage with 17:49 remaining in the half. Another Iona run put the Gaels back ahead, sparked by goals by Murphy and Meyer. Marist surged in the latter part of the first half, scoring five of the last six, taking a 9-6 lead into the break.
 
The Gaels were held off the scoreboard for the first 11:32 of the second half as Marist tacked on two goals to take it's first five-goal advantage. Iona responded scoring three of the next four goals, beginning with Libby Miller's fifth score of the season. When Marist responded, Murphy and Megan Collins connected to trim the deficit to 12-9 with 10:38 to play. Iona managed one goal for the remainder of the game, coming from Keenan's eighth goal of the season and final for her career.

Iona did not qualify for the MAAC tournament this season and says goodbye to it's graduating seniors Parker Brown, Kathryn Flannigan, Katie BeyerMaureen Murphy, Libby Miller, Shannon McCaffrey, Danielle Keenan and Christine Gironda.

  • Shannon McCaffrey made eight saves, grabbed three ground balls and caused three turnovers
  • Seniors Keenan and Miller each scored two goals in the final game of their careers.
  • Paulina Perkovich led both teams with four caused turnovers.
  • Iona cuaused 17 turnovers, compared to seven by Marist.
  • Marist controlled the opening draws, coming up with 20 out of 27.
  • Shannon McCaffrey concludes her career first in program history in saves (480) and second in goals-against-average (11.93)
