WEST POINT, NY – The Iona College volleyball program dropped its season-open match to the University of Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon, 0-3 (21-25, 17-25, 20-25). Senior
Karla Johnson and junior
Jamie Smith each led the Gaels with five kills and 7.5 points.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- In her first career start with the Gaels, sophomore Maile Powell had a team-high 11 assists.
- Red-shirt junior Jessica Paolucci had a team-high 11 digs with Powell and junior Taylor Cole each chipping in eight.
- Rookie Julia Thomas began her Iona career with five blocks. Senior Karla Johnson had four block in addition to her five kills
- Iona hit .114 as team compared to .152 for the Rams. URI's offense came from Claire Wagner who hit a match-high 14 kills on 40 swings. She also had a match-best 17 digs and 15 points.
- Rhode Island improves to 4-0 against Iona all-time. This was the first time the two programs had played since the 2014 season.
- Rookie Samantha Juran made her Iona debut playing a single set and collecting three assists and a service ace.

On Sunday, Sept. 1, the Maroon & Gold continue the army invitational against New Hampshire and the host Black Knights. The matches are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. You can follow both games via
