SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Iona College volleyball program fell in straight sets (21-25, 22-25, 13-25) to Seton Hall on in Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon. Junior
Jamie Smith was an all-around performer, leading the Gaels in kills, aces and blocks.
MATCH SUMMARY
Iona and Seton Hall stayed within striking distance of each other throughout the first set. Never straying more than three points away from each other, the Pirates were grasping with one hand on a 22-20 edge. Seton was able to get his second hand in a good position and the home team secured a 25-21 first set win.
Smith had six kills on 10 swings with one error. She also had three aces and four assists. Junior
Tess Connolly had 10 receptions in the first set. As a team Iona hit .281 in the opening set on 32 attempts.
Like the opening game, the Gaels and Pirates traded points in the early moments of the second set. Seton Hall took a three-point lead 17-14, forcing an Iona timeout facing its largest deficit of the set. The Maroon & Gold could not get within closer than two points. They fell behind two sets to none with a 22-25 decision.
Through two sets, Smith led Iona with 11 kills. She also had eight assists while sophomore
Maile Powell pushed 15 assists in two sets of action. Seton Hall hit .273 in the second set as each team had three attack errors. The Pirates won the second set despite three ball handling errors.
The third set began in an unfortunate way for Iona. A 13-3 run by Seton Hall out the Pirates ahead of the Maroon & Gold, 15-5. Iona dropped the third set by a final score of 25-13.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Smith finished the match with a season-high 13 kills and three aces. She also tied a season-best with eight digs and managed double-digit assists for the second straight match. Her 18.0 points is her highest total since Oct. 3, 2018 where the two-time All-MAAC Second Team honoree had 20 points against the Rider Broncs.
- It is Smith's 10th double-double of her career, and her first since the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Championship match against Canisius when she had 10 kills and 10 digs.
- Smith has surpassed her assist total from last season. She has 58 this season after finishing last year with 50.
- Redshirt senior Jessica Paolucci had 11 digs to lead the Maroon & Gold. Connolly had 10 digs.
- Seton Hall had the match-leader in kills with Haylee Gasser (16), digs with Eden Dolezal (14) and Grace Rosenberg (32).
- The Pirates have won all five matchups against the Gaels in their series history.
